I hate doing a full system re-installation.  About the only things I love about it is how responsive the system is when all the pork is gone, and the new opportunity to keep the software bloat down.

Peter Walsh of TLC’s Clean Sweep TV show had an interesting system for de-cluttering a drawer (desk, kitchen whatever) and the same system can be applied to a computer system.

Peter’s decluttering technique involved emptying the drawer’s contents into a nearby temporary storage box.   Every time you need something, you remove it from the box but instead of returning it into the box after it’s used, you put it away into the drawer.

After a month’s time, whatever’s left in the box gets given away or tossed, and you end up with a drawer that contains only contains the items that you truly need/use on a regular basis.  It’s a simple and effective system.

Now my system is the empty drawer and the new terabyte drive, the temporary storage box.  I can make my system leaner and more efficient once again.

I have no doubt that eventually, the bloat will start to creep in once more.  But by starting anew again, I get another chance at keeping it under control.
