I had a more successful session of W:AR yesterday evening while partnering up with my friend redrobot.

The afternoon session wasn’t so hot however.  The forces of  Order, once again, got steamrollered by the forces of Destruction as Order layers on the Bretonnia server demonstrated yet again that they can’t team up worth a damn.

I’m slowly beginning to refine the usage of my new Witch Hunter character class.  It’s certainly not a character class I’d recommend for new players because it requires finesse in game play.  However, the Witch Hunter proved to be pretty deadly in two pretty pitched RvR (realm vs. realm) scenario battles.

Enter Torryn the Ravenslayer

My original character was a Warrior Priest named Radryn.  This time around, I took out my newly minted Witch Hunter named Torryn.

I wanted to try a character class that required slightly more challenging gameplay and the Witch Hunter definitely requires that!

The Witch Hunter class can really dish out the damage but it’s relatively light armour means that you really can’t go toe-to-toe against most foes, especially if you’re going solo.  Ambush and hit-and-run tactics works best and Witch Hunters should always operate with a party.

Positioning is extremely important for a Witch Hunter player since one of its key attacks enables you to completely ignore the armour stat for the target if you attack  the target from behind.

This makes the Witch Hunter pretty deadly in a mob attack  situation where the target is often too pre-occupied to focus solely on you.

The Witch Hunter is especially effective against magic casters.   This is how I racked up most of my kills in the RvR scenario.  I waited until the opposing side’s tankers engaged our forward elements, then outflanked them to hit their spellcasters from the rear.  This was incredibly effective as  it at least kept their spellcasters occupied (or dispatched them completely) and prevented them from aiding their offensive line.

More often than not it was a suicide mission since I’d get mobbed by their elements coming from the rear.   But the important thing was that it helped the team and the overall goal.

Tips for the Witch Hunter Player

I’m no expert since I’ve only started playing the game, but here are some Witch Hunter tips that I think might be useful, as gleaned from gameplay:

  • Choose the Cultivating and Apothecary skills so you can mix your own healing/buffing potions.  Your vulnerability whilst alone means having your ability bar filled to the brim with healing potions for quick access might be able to get you out of trouble— but don’t count on it.
  • In RvR, try to stay out of sight and survey the battlefield and choose your targets carefully.  Rushing in to finish them off will most likely mean your death, so try and go for high value  supporting units like healers.
  • A Witch Hunter is particularly deadly to retreating targets.  Your ranged attack with a pistol, its ability to slow down targets when they’re shot from behind and the Witch Hunter’s armour-ignoring rear aspect attack makes the Witch Hunter the perfect class to run down a retreating opponent.
  • As mentioned above, Witch Hunters are good at slowing down and dispatching retreating players so watch for the opposing team’s lines of retreat, pick a spot out of sight and wait to ambush players retreating from battle in order to regain their health.

Happy hunting!

dont forget the witch hunters ability (lasts only a few seconds) that allows all your positional abilities to work regardless of where you are. im really enjoying my witch hunter (wish i was playing now!) but i will have to console myself untill i can play again by perusing my collectors edition of WAR. And also by thinking up what alternative characters i want to start (i am thinking shadow warrior for my next guy).

I loaded up my Warrior Priest during my last session and I have to say that I’m having more fun with the Witch Hunter.

It’s a challenging character class to play because the Witch Hunter isn’t particularly tough and can’t take a lot of damage but careful movement, some stealth and good ability timing allows the Witch Hunter to deal some significant damage of its own with a full set of Accusations and perhaps a morale ability charge.

The Witch Hunter’s use is certainly more surgical than the other characters I’ve tried so far.

And there’s also just something so satisfying hearing the report of that pistol, especially when it delivers the coup de grace! :-)

yeah shooting things in the face is very satisfying. its the main reason i like the class it has so much style (i didnt like the witch elf which is the same thing basically mechanic-wise). I think i might also try an ironbreaker as i like tanky tanks.

The other character I’m leveling at the moment is a Elven Swordmaster named Elsynadeth. I’m finding the Elf Swordmaster kinda ho-hum right now but perhaps because she’s still low level.

I saw an Iron Breaker at work during RvR yesterday evening. They can really take a pounding. I was using the WP and was atop the cliff face in New Emskrank, looking west, and down below I saw an Iron Breaker standing his ground. As a WP and WH player, I was amazed at the amount of punishment he took from the Destruction players that were dogging him.

He started to retreat at 50% health. Oddly enough, they didn’t pursue him, even after they had killed the other Order players that were there. He might have done some serious damage to them and they didn’t want to risk getting ambushed in a weakened state.

As he passed to within range while retreating, I started healing him like mad. I think he was surprised because he started spinning around, probably trying to find the source of the health boost. He didn’t think to look way up. :-)

So I might try an Iron Breaker myself after I level up the Swordmaster for a bit.

i played a black orc in the open beta and got him to level 11 or so i think. and he could take a ton of damage, it was great. i am saving playing destruction till my girlfriend can play. so i am going to try out a few order classes (shadow warrior, iron breaker, and warrior priest i think). we really need to find a guild or start a guild so we can do things that require a more co-ordinated effort. what level are all your guys? i hope you arnt getting too far ahead;)

My Witch Hunter hit level 11 and reknown rank 8 last night in a pretty good session. I hooked up with a bunch of casual players and we stuck together through a couple of RvR scenarios and we won them all. It was nice seeing Order actually use teamwork for once.

I really need to do a lot more RvR scenarios. I’ve been sort of ignoring that aspect of the game in favour of solo questing but it’s intended and vital for W:AR players to participate so I’ll have to take my WP out for a lot more RvR scenario play.

As for my character levels, my Warrior Priest is at 10, Witch Hunter is at 11 and the Swordmaster is at 8.
