I picked up a no-frills impact wrench from Canadian Tire to aid in tire maintenance, among other household tasks.
I usually have the technicians at the local Canadian Tire change them since it’s a free service. I usually kill two birds with one stone and have it done when I need to shop for items at Canadian Tire.
However, I finally decided to get my own impact wrench and change my own tires after the yahoos staffing the local Canadian Tire kept me waiting in the store for 3 hours one day because of a screw-up.
I waited for the impact wrench to go on sale and snagged it for $79 instead of $149.
Features
- Powerful 7.5A motor
- 228 lb/ft. of torque
- 2,700 bpm, 2,100 rpm
- Die cast magnesium gear housing
- Hardened hammer plate
- ½” square drive
- Rocker switch for single handed forward/reverse
It feels solid and well built. It is a little on the loud side but hey, it’s a tool, and it’s not like I’ll be using it at 5 in the morning. It made removing the tires a breeze!
I didn’t use it to tighten the lug nuts though. Impact wrenches have so much torque, they can over-tighten the lugs and damage the studs.
I tightened the lugs by hand using the tire iron but I really should get a torque wrench to be absolutely certain I have tightened them to the right specifications.
After filling the tires with air, I drove around the block to make sure there was no odd sounds, wobbling and that I didn’t lose a lug nut or tire on the trip.
So far so good!
I’ll check them again for tightness tomorrow morning after the usual trip to the subway station.
Bottom line: it’s a decent impact wrench that can get the job done. Judging from all the positive reviews, it’ll last too! It’s a great buy, especially if you can get it on sale!
