Disney/Pixar's WALL-E

Finally got a chance to see Pixar’s latest movie WALL-E. Can Pixar do no wrong? wTwNjzVFVU

Pixar’s strong focus on developing the characters first before even hashing out the story specifics pays off. WALL-E has an endearing robotic cast and they remain the heart of the story despite the absolutely fantastic computer generated visuals

I wasn’t distracted with thoughts about the process behind the visuals like I was with other CG films. Beowulf comes to mind…

The CG didn’t take centre stage and overpower the audience. My attention was squarely focused on the characters and that hasn’t happened in a while.

Wall-E's love interest: E.V.E.

I especially liked how EVE, WALL-E’s love interest, was animated. Despite having a body which consists of just four primary components and a face showing nothing more than two eyes, she is incredibly expressive and graceful.

EVE is cute, cool and dare I say, a little bit sexy? I mean, who can resist a girl with a liquid cooled quasar ion cannon? :-D

FYI, Jonathan Ives, Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, was tapped by Pixar to design E.V.E.’s look.

The bleak setting of the story took me a little by surprise but I think the stark contrast was a necessary storytelling device. The health/environmental message may have been delivered with a heavy hand but that’s not entirely unexpected since WALL-E is an all ages movie and you have to be straightforward for the young ‘uns.

The anime fan in me was waiting for a nod to the Japanese mecha genre in WALL-E. But as far as I can recall, there wasn’t any. Not even a tiny one. Oh well. :-P

I loved the soundtrack as well. It was composed by one of my favourite composers, James Horner! EDIT: My mistake! The composer is Thomas Newman, but nevertheless, I think it’s a great soundtrack and I’ll still buy it. I haven’t added very many soundtracks to my CD collection as of late but you can bet this’ll be on it.

Besides the soundtrack, I’ll be on the hunt for other WALL-E merchandise. I was scoping out WALL-E toys and collectibles online and naturally, they’re all out of stock. I’m heading out later today to the local big box stores. Hopefully they’ll have some stuff left!

WALL-E earned an amazing 97% rating on rottentomatoes.com yet some critics actually “splatted” WALL-E. I think you’d have to be a soulless, unimaginative bastard to rate this movie negatively. ;-D

I think WALL-E is most definitely worth the price of admission so get out and see it! I don’t think you’d be disappointed!

Video ahead: WALL-E observes the grace that is E.V.E., but he gets more than he bargains for!
