I’ve heard people talk about Interplay’s “Fallout” series and what’s apparent is that so many people seemed to hold it in such high reverence.

In light of the upcoming Fall release of Fallout 3, I decided to find a torrent and see what all the fuss was about.

I started with Fallout 2 since I’ve heard that the experience was very much like Fallout, except without the annoying interface design choices that apparently plague the first game. Fallout 2 also features a completely new story line so playing the first Fallout game isn’t a technical prerequisite.

I chose a female character since I’ve read that an overwhelming majority of characters you meet, especially shopkeepers and traders (etc) are male and that turning on the sex appeal can work to your advantage in a lot of cases.

I made the character a teenager since apparently your character does age as the game progresses. I didn’t want to become an old hag too soon since I hear this game can be pretty long. I’m not sure if age actually becomes a technical disadvantage in the game such as having a negative effect on combat or charisma for example, so I just hedged my bets.

My character, Sayah, is currently in the ragged rundown town of Klamath, east of her home village of Arroyo, doing the side-quests and trying to earn enough to buy some tattered leather armour.

So far, it’s a slow start. I even have to think twice about engaging a lowly sewer rat in combat… I kid you not! After a journey through the sewers, my healing herbs are almost depleted and now I have to find a way to beg/borrow/steal (most likely the last option) more medical supplies…

Apparently, Fallout 2’s slow start is a well known fact and everyone says it gets significantly better after Klamath. I sure hope so because right now I’m faced with some mandatory, possibly tedious level grinding before I step out into that blighted wasteland.

Depending on how long it takes me to get out of that hick town Klamath, It may be a while before you hear me talk about Fallout 2 .
