By chance, I've picked up an anime series called Soukou No Strain that premiered in Japan in November 2006.
Soukou No Strain is set in the distant future. The Galactic Union and the merciless Deague wage an interstellar war against one another.
Young Sara Werec has joined the military to be with her brother on the front lines, but his dark betrayal shatters her life and sends Sara into the crucible of war on a quest for answers that only her brother, a man she thought she knew, can provide.

Introduction
The Galactic Union is at war with the mysterious Deague and like many young people, Sara Werec joins the service to become a Reasoner: a highly trained pilot that utilizes the powerful and agile Strain mecha. A Strain maintains an absolutely unique link with its pilot through the use of a MIMIC, a cybernetic interface comprised of the pilot's own brain cells. Because of the way a MIMIC is created, a pilot can't use another pilot's MIMIC nor can there be multiple MIMICS for each pilot.
Once a pilot's MIMIC is destroyed, they can no longer function as Reasoners.
However, Sara joins the military for a different reason. Due to the theory of general relativity and faster-than-light travel, she will have been long dead before her brother, ace Reasoner Ralph Werec, returns from his tour on the front lines. Ralph is the only family Sara has, so Sara dedicates herself to following in Ralph's footsteps in the hopes of being together with him again.
One night, the military base where Sara conducts her training is attacked. As Sara attempts to defend the base with her fellow pupils, she runs into a deadly enemy ace pilot who uses a Strain-type mecha. She discovers the primary objective of the enemy isn't the destruction of the academy but something inside the nearby military lab.
The enemy ace pilot cuts through the defenders and heads for the lab with Sara in hot pursuit. There, he retrieves a young girl from a stasis chamber. Sara confronts him, only to learn that the enemy ace pilot is Ralph Werec!
Ralph makes his escape, nearly killing Sara in the process and destroying her Strain and her MIMIC. Without her Strain piloting abilities and faced with this shattering betrayal, Sara assumes an alias and takes on a new goal: confront her brother Ralph Werec to get some answers— and kill him if necessary.
