I'm watching a new anime series called Moonlight Mile. The setting is set in a near future Earth. A new energy source called Helium-3 has been discovered on the moon, prompting a massive international effort to colonize and harvest the new energy source. But this new Space Race is frought with conspiracy, political machinations and murder. The story revolves around two high adventure seeking friends, Sawarutari Goru and Jack Woodbridge, and their different paths they take to make their amibitions of making it into space admist this tense and dangerous time.
The first episode starts out in medias res and successfully hooks you into wanting to find out what happens in the next episode. But just the first few minues of Moonlight Mile is filled with violence, death and sex. It's plainly obvious this is not your average cheery space adventure anime. There's nothing particularly endearing about the main characters either but at least the rough-around-the-edges Goru is shown to have some heart. Jack Woodbridge (aka "Lostman"), on the other hand, is cold, arrogant and ambitious. You can already tell there's gonna be a showdown between these two.
Unfortunately the character animation isn't particularly good and it's made all the more obvious when seen against some pretty slick computer graphics used in the show. But given the set-up and the promise of an interesting story, it can be overlooked.
What's notable about the series is the realistic portrayal of near-future space technologies. Basically what's on the drawing board now, is seen in the show. This is a refreshing change from God Mecha, and even the latest Gundam offerings that have grown more fantastical.
The first episode doesn't reveal very much but it shows enough potential that I'll keep watching and reporting back.
