?The National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre??had published a so called ‘fact’ sheet entitled the “Dangers of Hentai” The problem with the article is that the article’s wording often blurs the line between the terms?anime?and hentai.? It fails to make the clear and important distinction between the two and in some instances, interchanges the use of both terms.
I’ve been a long time anime fan for many years.? I’ve seen some of the misconceptions the general public has about anime.? For instance, some think the use of ‘large eyes’ as a way to make characters appear younger so as to feed some underlying pedophilic desire of anime fans. 9_9?
So the last thing anime fans need?is?some?poorly researched government report that completely misrepresents what anime is.
An example of the inaccuracy of the CNECC’s article is the use of the term anime.? The article states:
“In Japan, animation is often refered to as anim?, H-anim?, or adult anim?.”
That’s wrong.? Anime is a term which refers to Japanese animation in general.? It’s?a term which describes the primary genre.??H-anime or hentai anime is?only a sub-genre and makes up a comparatively small portion of anime.
CNECC’s definition is equivalent to claiming that:??”In North America, motion pictures are often referred to as movies, adult films or pornography.”?
Here’s an example where they interchange the use Japanese anime and hentai:
“Cases of hentai involving child sexual abuse images are beginning to emerge in Canada . In addition to being accessible on the Internet, Japanese anim? has also been found in local bookstores as the title and cover of such publications do not always appear pornographic.”
To those who know the difference between? anime and hentai, it’s clear that the CNECC meant to say that hentai has been found in local bookstores with the title and cover art that’s not always pornographic in appearance.? But they use the term Japanese anime instead.
As I was mentioning to another blogger, Canada has a decent sized anime and manga fan base.?? Vancouver studios are often used to localize anime productions for marketing here in the West.? Canada is also known to have some of the best animation schools in the world.
With such a knowledgeable pool of resources, it amazes me how the CNECC could grossly misrepresent anime when an honest effort in research would have revealed their errors.? It’s inexcusable.
The CNECC has taken that ‘fact’ sheet offline.? If they do plan on re-publishing a version of it, I hope the government drones they employ actually make an effort to present an accurate picture.
